LEARNING ABOUT LEARNING DISABILITIES

Hello there lovelies….

As you guessed from the topic, today’s blog is going to be all about *LEARNING DISABILITIES* 🙂

NOW WHAT IS LEARNING DISABILITY ??? :/

Learning disabilities is a broad term which might look very different from one child to another.

One child may struggle with reading and spelling, while another loves books but can’t understand math.

Still another child may have difficulty understanding what others are saying or communicating out loud.

The problems are very different, but they are all learning disorders.

NOW YOU ARE PROBABLY WONDERING WHAT CAUSES LEARNING DISABILITY

Not me nor the experts know what actually causes learning disabilities, however, some of the possible causes for Learning disabilities include;

  • Heredity : Learning disabilities often run in the family
  • Problems during pregnancy and birth : illness or injury during or before birth, usage of drug and alcohol while pregnant, low birth weight, lack of oxygen, premature or prolonged labour.
  • Incidents after birth: head injuries, nutritional deprivation, exposure to toxic substance such as lead.

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS OF LEARNING DISABILITY

It’s not always easy to identify learning disabilities. And because of all the wide variations, there is no single symptom or profile that you can look to as proof of a problem. However, some warning signs are more common than others at different ages. If you’re aware of what they are, you’ll be able to catch a learning disorder early

The earlier detected… The better 🙂

APPRECIATE YOUR CHILD’S DIFFICULTIES

Ever heard of thumb opposition ???

photo                                   thumb opposition

what is this all about ? *-*

Think of all the activities you do day to day that involve the use of your thumbs. Without the thumb, Would you be able to write with a pencil? Or Brush your teeth? Or Open or close the lid on a jar?

Okay now u might think, Ahh whats the big deal here ? I can do that !! Okay so lets assume you are trying already 😀

How long did it take for you to open a jar if you tried to do it with only your fingers? 😛

Even something as simple as taking out a coin from purse, holding a spoon to eat or spread cheese over bread feels like … emmmm.. let me put it this way, **CLASH OF THE TITANS** maybe?? 😛 LOL

Okay back to some serious business 🙂

How does it trouble the innocent souls?? 😦

Kids begin to develop thumb rotation to form a spherical grip between their 1st and 2nd year of life.  The thumb begins to develop a better ability to rotate and oppose the other fingers. But for a variety of reasons, many children lack the thumb stability for sustaining the thumb in a partially bent position when using writing and drawing tools.  They have difficulty holding implements between the tip of the thumb opposing fingertips.

They substitute by using stronger hand muscles that pull the thumb straight up beside the index finger or wrapped over other fingers when writing and drawing.  This causes hand fatigue and difficulty grading the amount of pressure for pushing a pencil or crayon.

And a result of which, control is less precise and work may be messy. 😦

If a child gets easily fatigue, writing is going to be a terrific episode that it is capable enough to create negative memories of it, because of this a child may come to a decision not to show interest in writing.

BRAIN BREAKS ACTIVITY

what is this all about ????

For any child, looking at the books endlessly, attending long lectures and long hours of science practicals could be tiresome, exhausting or simply boring… *phewww*

Let alone the kids, when I was a child myself, my teachers would catch me sleeping between classes LOL 😀

And I’ve always wished my teachers would atleast give me a two minute break between the 40 minutes lecture session 😦 Lets just say that never happened **BORING**

Children with disabilities have abilities too and that is exactly what this activity is all about… making sure those abilities blossom and shine just so all the dreams those innocent little souls have, can come true 🙂

Why did I think about blogging?

Hello there readers…..

This is Geeka.. Ever since I spoke about blogging or the very idea of blogging all I got was raised eyebrows… Emmmm.. Why blog?? You have an official website don’t you ?? GOD Geeka, how on earth do u have so much time to even think of that ?? –were all the thoughts of the few with raised eyebrows LOL 😀

Ok that being that, I want you folks to imagine something now…

Imagine you are in a foreign, noisy and crowded city at night, not understanding the language spoken, recognizing only a few words but, not really comprehending situations taking place around you, wanting to express a need for help but not being able to.. Now this my friend, will help you relate to what a child with autism feels on an ordinary day. 🙂

I hope you got the picture now 🙂

Why blog ???

Well… Lets just say Geeka just wants to share the knowledge she was blessed with and that she acquired during her professional life of handling parents and their special children for nearly 20 years, to help special children learn, cope and develop… All she wants is to create awareness of much subtle issues like autism, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, slow learners, developmental delay,  learning disabilities and along with creating awareness she also wants to share ways through which the gap between the child’s disorder and normalcy is reduced..

What is that I intend to blog ?

I will be putting up several activities, videos, workout sheets so on and so forth on my blog which would benefit the child and through which the parent, teachers and carers of the special children can help lessen this gap I was talking about earlier.. 🙂

Along with these activities I shall also encourage a question session platform sort off,  where any loving soul can post a query to which she or he would surely find an answer to. 🙂

-If the child can’t learn the way you teach, you teach the way the child can learn..

Much love, prayers and good vibes from  Geeka.
